Red Canyon, on highway 12 just to the west of Bryce Canyon, is a beautiful area of Red Rock. Most people just pass by on the way to Bryce Canyon, but for mountain bikers, horseback riders, and ATV enthusiasts, this area is a destination in itself. Next time we visit the area we might not go into Bryce Canyon at all -- this area is much more beautiful but more tourist-free.

Utah Mountain Biking Southern Plateau Index

This trail connects Casto Canyon with Red Canyon. Lots of ups and downs and side trails make this one difficult to follow and a bit confusing. Great views -- my favorite part of the trail is the little desert section, at the summit between Casto and Losee Canyons.
ATV trail through wide open colorful red rock canyon. The last mile of the trail splits off of the main ATV trail into a lightly-used section of trail. On my trip through here I only saw three ATV's, set up for long-haul touring and just putting along slowly. On the upper part of the trail where the canyon narrows I surprised a golden eagle, which had no choice but to fly within five yards of me as it made its escape up wind and downhill.
County Road from Highway 12 to Losee and Casto Canyon trailheads.
This intimate canyon with beautiful rock formations is heavily used by horse outfitters. After riding this a couple of times I brought my wife and daughter along to enjoy the view on foot -- this is my favorite part of the canyon.
This short section of the Rich trail cuts through the Gap. This very technical trail is shown as part of the Losee Cassidy loop on Utah Mountain Biking but I prefer the alternate route of the main Cassidy trail -- especially on my first acclimmation ride here.
This is the bottom third of the Thunder Mountain trail, including a gentle section of singletrack, followed by a steep climb up a set of switchbacks and across a couple of knife-edge ridges.
