This map shows several hikes and mountain bike rides in the area of Lucky Peak Reservoir. One hike, Lydle Gulch, starts and Barclay bay at the east end of the dam. A mountain bike ride to Bonneville point starts at the same point. A sagebrush hike along the Diversion Dam pool starts across the river at Foote Park.

Idaho Lucky Peak Stake Park
Service road. This service road climbs from the City of Tacoma Power Station up to the Barclay Bay parking area. Non motorized vehicles only.
Follow the Oregon Trail from Lucky peak reservoir by climbing out of Lydle Gulch along the dirt road to the plateau just west of Lucky Peak Dam. Then turn east (the wrong way) at the oregon trail marker and climb to Bonneville point, for the view of the Boise Valley as first seen by Captain Bonneville in 1832. On April 1, 2005 I spotted an antelope on the trail -- in the winter of 2004/2005 a herd of antelope wintered in this area and on the plateau across the river.
Lydle Gulch. Lydle gulch makes a good early spring walk or mountain bike ride. You'll hear meadowlarks will see mule deer. The segment of the trail shown here ends at the rocky area of the north branch where the trail get steeper.
This short section of road connects Lydle Gulch to Bonneville point put is not accessible to the public. (The gate at the top of this trail is locked and posted private-land, no trespassing.)
This closed road to the basalt quarry above Diversion Dam passes through excellent bird habitat and is a good spring hike, if you don't mind a bit of traffic noise from the highway on the opposite side of the river.
Road from Barclay Bay to Foote Park. Foote Park comemorates the early effort of Albert Foote to irrigate the Boise Valley. The journal of Mary Hallock Foote was the the basis of Wallact Stegner's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Angle of Repose.
Basalt Quarry just about Diversion Dam, which is the head of the New York Canal. Because of the New York Canal and the reservoir capacity provided by Anderson Ranch, Lucky Peak, and Arrow Rock reservoirs, the Treasure Valley in Ada and Canyon counties is one of the most productive areas of irrigated land in the USA.
Trailhead for Lydle Gulch and the Oregon Trails. Park here or at the Barclay Bay recreation area at the east end of Lucky Peak Dam.
Water Access. This canyon is an obvious access route to water for the Oregon Trail. You'll find a few rusting old buckets along this canyon if you travel up to the Oregon Trail from this point.
At one time this gate was closed and the land was posted here at this cattleguard, but now a pedestrian-sized gate with no lock or sign seems to grant access to the Lydle gulch above.
Foote Park Trailhead. Not really a trailhead. Just a locked gate with a wide spot in the barbed wire where you might step through. The abandoned road leads to a Basalt Quarry overlooking diversion dam. Alternatively, relive history by turning off at the steep canyon which was used by Oregon Trail pioneers to access the snake river.
Lydle Gulch. This is the end of the double track road at Lydle Gulch. Above here, the trail is steep and rocky, but very interesting.
Bonneville Point, known to immigrants as the Boise Hill.

Discovery Park below Lucky Peak Reservoir.
Oregon Trial Turnoff. Cross Lydle gulch and contour up and around the hill above you to the northwest on the dirt road to reach the Oregon Trail from the Lucky Peak Recreation Area.
Foote Park. This waypoint is at the foundation of the Arthur Foote House, just beyond the actual park.
