Bogus Basin Ski Area
The Sappers beginner cross-country ski trail/hiking trail parallels the Boise ridge road. Return in spring for an enjoyable hike.
The Shafer Butte Picnic Area road is an intermediate cross country ski trail which climbs the south side of More's mountain to the saddle with Shafer Butte. In the early 1980's I conned a friend into going cross country skiing by saying that this was a good way to meet girls. Surprisingly, we did meet a trio of young women who shared their wine and cheese with us at the snowy picnic area thus disproving the aphorism that great expectations lead to great disappointments.
Bogus Basin Ski Resort doesn't call this cross country ski trail the pickle pond loop anymore, but this ski trail still passes right by the sewage lagoon for Bogus Basin Lodge. The loop rejoins the Boise Ridge Road to the north of the end of the trail shown.
Pine Creek Traverse. Access the back side of the mountain served by the Pine Creek quad by taking this long cat track.
The cabin traverse to showcase is a good escape route for people who went to the top of Shafer Butte without the requisite ability.
Lunch route for people who want to spend the big bucks to eat at the Pioneer Lodge.
The Boise Ridge Road from the Bitteroot chair lift lower terminal to the western flank of More's mountain is an intermediate cross country ski trail.
Save this route for later winter or early spring after the snow has covered all of the brush. This off trail route follows the east face of Shafer Butte along the Pine Creek lift line, and then over to lower wildcat.
Inspiration. Slight climb involved. Excellent views at twilight. On a cold morning after a night snowstorm this run is as good as it qets here in Boise. But because of the sun exposure the powder doesn't last long. Use it or lose it. Also good on sunny spring days in the early afternoon, provided that the snow year was better than average.
Shindig Tree Run. This track roughly parallels the Shindig ski run through the trees.
Superior Ski Lift
Drop off the right side of upper Paradise to enjoy some steeper terrain before cruising lower paradise. This route is for experts only.
Wildcat has several entrances, depending on skier ability. Intermediate Skiers can acess wildcat along a northeasterly diagonal cat track, avoiding the upper section of wildcat not shown here.
Deer Point Express. Quad chairlift.
Bitterroot Ski Lift. The Bitterrot Ski Lift serves a north-facing bowl that has some of the best snow on the mountain. There's something for everyone in this area, from easy beginner runs to tree skiing.
Morning Star. The morning star lift connects the lower lodge with the upper lodge.
Showcase Chair Lift.
Coach is a short lift serving beginning skiers.
Last Chance. Expert Ski Run
Mambo Meadows. Intermediate ski run with consistent low gradient, perfect for carving those turns.
Bowl. Advanced Ski Run.
Bogus Basin Ski Area. Excellent tree skiing. To reach Bogus Basin Ski Area, proceed north from Boise on Harrison Boulevard, which turns into Bogus Basin Road.
Eat, drink and be merry.
Shafer Picnic Area. The Shafer Butte picnic area and campground is located in the saddle between More's Mountain and Shafer Butte.
Parking and lodge for cross country skiing.
The lower ridge has a nice consistent pitch and is therefore often used for slalom racing. One of my favorite runs.
Junction on the Southwest Side of More's Mountain. North to Harris Creek Summit, and Horseshoe Bend or Placerville. Southeast leads to the Shafer Butte picnic area.
More's mountain can be reached from the Shafer Creek picnic area in winter by skinning up to the mild gradient of the south side through the meadows. Beware of the steep east side of More's Mountain because this is a dangerous uncontrolled avalanche area.
Majestic follows the ridge from Shafer Butte towards the saddle with Mores Mountain
Intersection of Boise Ridge Road and Bonanza Trail, at the Superior chairlift loading station.
Alpine. Escape the crowds of showcase.
Bermuda Triangle. If you don't know the area, don't go too low. If you miss the trail to paradise, you'll spend a cold night in hell.
Liberty. Expert Ski Trail.
Cascade. The bumps get really big here sometimes.
Nice wide run often gets crowded because of the consistent pitch suitable for skiers of most abilities.
Triumph. Advanced Ski Run.
