Book Recommendations

Fat Tire Tales and Trails Arizona Mountain Bike Trail Guide New Mighty Moto (Locals Only) Edition by Cosmic Ray is the book with the colorful cartoon of the mountain biker going over the bars amidst the cactus. This excellent book, colorful in many ways, has good trail descriptions and well-drawn maps. I bought my copy at Landis Cyclery at Warner and Rural roads in Tempe after a recommendation from some mountain bikers I met on the Desert Classic trail.

Kath and Ron's Guide to Idaho Paddling by Katherine Daley and Ron Watters is a canoe travel book which describes flatwater and easy whitewater trips with good detail and excellent maps.

Trails of Western Idaho by Margaret Fuller is full of descriptive prose and maps. Margaret Fuller is still out there hiking somewhere, and has recently updated the trail descriptions in a third edition which is available from Trail Guide Books.

Trails of the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains is another excellent book by Margaret Fuller describing trails and backpacking trips around the area of Stanley, Idaho.

Mountain Biking Idaho by Steve Stuebner is a good book with detailed trail descriptions including odometer checkpoints and professionally drawn maps.

Other Websites with GPS Trail Data

Trace GPS is a collaborative web site with GPS XML tracks for outdoor activities in France. From their front page - France has many out of the way places where paradise is hiding. Across the country we have many trails that will lead you though the flowers and fresh air. (Looks good.)

Wiki Loc is a new but rapidly growing site with user-contributed trails and waypoints overlaid on Google Maps and USGS Topographic maps and Aerial Photos. I like it, because the site is simple and easy to use.

MotionBased contains many user-contributed trails and waypoints overlaid on Google Maps and ESRI data Topographic maps and Aerial Photos. The website focuses on fitness-oriented outdoor activities and has hundreds of thousands of trails and a map player that can interactively plays back your activity.

Travel by GPS contains many GPS trailmaps and searchable links to other sites, as well as links to GPS resources and an excellent tutorial on making your own GPS maps. Travel By GPS should be your starting point for finding GPS trip and trail data on the web.

GPS Nepal has waypoints in text format for treks in Nepal Himalaya

GPS Tour Info is an international trail website with GPS trail data in the G7ToWin format .g7t. You can use the free software G7ToWin to send data in .g7t format to and from your GPS receiver. G7ToWin is also compatible with the GPS Exchange (.gpx) format. (reciprocal link partnership)

Geocaching is a commercial web site which supports the popular sport of geocaching.

Adventure Cycling Association describes many road bicycle trips. Their site contains gps routes of their bicycle tours in gpx and other popular gps data formats.

Trail Registry Interactive Maps and Custom Trail Guides for Hiking and Backpacking.

GPS Mountain Bike Trail Directory has GPS Waypoints, Routes and Tracks to Northern California Mountain Biking Trails, plus an index to many other gps trail mapping websites.

Backpacker Magazine GPS Page contains downloadable trail data in GPX format.

Connecticut Mountain Bike Community Trails Page

TopoFusion GPX Maps contains trails near Tucson, Arizona, and for Brian Head, Southern Utah.

Team TopoGrafix Trails contains trails from Massachusettes.

Tennessee Landforms is not a trails website but has waypoints in gpx format for waterfalls, arches, balds, lakes, regions. The same author has mountain biking trailheads on the site at East Tennessee Mountain Bike Rides.

Hiking with a GPS has mostly trails from the Toronto area but others from Arizona, California and Hawaii.

Idaho Trail Websites

Exploring Idaho's High Desert contains professionally written trail descriptions with trails overlayed on topographic maps. This site is by Sheldon Bluestein, the author of several trail guides, and is based on his out of print book, Exploring Idaho's High Desert. Sheldon has generously placed the entire contents of his book on line! I discovered this site when mapping the Wees Bar Trail when one of my companions on the ride had discovered the site and was carrying a printed topographic map of our trip!

Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation describes or provides links to descriptions of many hiking and biking trails throughout Idaho.

Payette National Forest is an excellent resource for hiking trails around McCall Idaho, which provides very good descriptions for many beautiful hiking trails. This is the best government web site that I've ever seen and one of the best recreation web sites.

Idaho Outdoor Recreation Idaho Department of Commerce Travel Planner website's outdoor page.

The Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association promotes responsible mountain biking and trail development in the Boise area.

The Bike Map Dude publishes mountain bike guides for California.

GPS and Mapping

GPS Receiver Information, Software, and Hardware Reviews of Garmin, Lowrance, Magellan and other GPS Receivers is the definitive guide to more than you ever wanted to know about GPS. I recommend this site highly for people considering the purchase of a GPS Receiver.

Forest Pal - Desktop Digital Mapping - Forest Pal, formerly Digital Grove, offers simple, practical information about digital cartography, GPS and Geographic Information Systems. The only required investment for the tools and techniques offered above is curiosity and a little time. The information here may be all you need to create maps or it can serve as an introduction to more serious study.
