The Gold Fork Cross Country Ski Trail is located about 70 miles Northeast of Boise, Idaho, off of highway 21. This trail head is part of the Idaho Park-n-Ski trail system, which requires a trail permit, which can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. The permit pays for trail grooming. The Gold Fork 5-mile loop of moderate difficulty is usually groomed for Skate-skiing. No dogs, but dogs are allowed at the whoop-em-up ski area just to the South. Across the highway, the Summit/Skyline trails can be used to access an extensive trail system from Banner Ridge to the north to Whoop-em-up to the South.
The eight mile Elkhorn loop at Banner Ridge, just outh of Lowman, Idaho, makes a pleasant day of skiing. Note that when the trail is icy the Northwest leg of the loop climbing to the summit from the trailhead can be a frightening downhill for beginning cross country skiers! The rest of the loop is fairly easy. The north edge of the loop touches the rim of the canyon of the South Fork of the Payette river, providing a spectacular view of the Lowman Area.
Bogus Basin is a ski resort 15 miles north of Boise, Idaho. One of my favorite cross country ski trips is to travel to the Shafer Creek Picnic area and then proceed up through the meadows to the top of More's Mountain.
Bogus Basin Ski Resort. This winter map shows the Bogus Basin downhill ski trails, a few cross country ski trails, and includes GPS waypoints for ski lift loading stations. The views on the preview page were created by screen capturing views using WM3D GPS Mapping Software which allows you to virtually fly over the resort.
Pilot Peak, about 15 miles north of Idaho City, is a popular area for experienced back-country skiers and snowmobilers. The GPS Exchange (.gpx) map contains just three waypoints More's Creek Summit, Pilot Peak, and Freeman Peak together with links to 3D data on this server, but no trails. This map will be useful to you for planning and visualizing your route. (At least you can print a map of your planned route and leave it in your car so that the search and rescue people will find you after the storms pass!)
Ponderosa State Park is on the shore of Payette Lake just a mile northeast of McCall, Idaho. You'll find family camping, hiking and biking trails, and a surprisingly diversity of terrain and habitag from dry sagebrush hillsides to old-growth Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir and boggy wetlands. In winter the trails and access roads become cross country ski trails.
Terrace Lakes Golf Course is about an hour's drive north of Boise, Idaho, just north of the small town of Crouch in Garden Valley. Terrace Lakes Golf Course has associated themselves with a cross country ski club and grooms trails in the winter. Buy a ski and soak pass to use their excellent hot springs pool after skiing, and then use the restaurant afterwards. This is a beautiful location, especially with the nearby high mountains. And the folks are really friendly here. Snowmobilers can find an excellent trail network that begins here.
